THE GIRL WHO STOLE MIDNIGHT

THE GIRL WHO STOLE MIDNIGHT

At exactly 12 noon, every clock in the city stopped. A little girl stood at the end of an abandoned hallway, staring at a blood-red moon that should not have been visible in daylight. Daniel, a security guard, watched her on the building’s CCTV. He rushed upstairs, but the hallway was empty. Then his monitor displayed a message: “PLEASE STOP LOOKING FOR ME. YOU ALREADY FOUND ME ONCE.” Daniel froze. He had worked in that building for twenty years. He had never seen the girl before. Suddenly, every camera showed the same hallway—but in each one, the girl stood a little closer. He ran toward the exit. His phone rang. An old recording of his own voice played: “Whatever happens, never let her reach the clock room.” Behind him, a tiny voice whispered, “You promised you would remember me.” Daniel turned. The girl was holding a broken pocket watch. Inside its glass was a photograph of Daniel as a little boy, standing beside her. Then he remembered. He had an imaginary sister who disappeared from every family photograph after a strange accident when they were children. The girl smiled sadly and opened the watch. Every clock in the city began ticking again. Daniel looked at his reflection in the dark hallway window. He was no longer an old security guard. He was the little boy from the photograph. And the girl whispered, “Now it’s your turn to wait for me.” The red moon vanished. At noon, the hallway was empty again. But one security camera continued recording. This time, the person watching it was the little girl—grown old, sitting at Daniel’s desk. Would you open the pocket watch?
