THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR

THE WOMAN IN THE MIRROR

At 3:17 AM, Daniel was driving home through a foggy forest when he noticed a woman in a torn grey veil standing in the middle of the road. He slammed the brakes. Nobody was there. Shaking, he checked his rearview mirror. The woman’s pale face stared back at him from the back seat. “Please,” she whispered, “don’t let me reach home.” Daniel spun around. The car was empty. Terrified, he accelerated toward the nearest town. Then his phone rang. It was his wife. “Daniel,” she cried, “where are you? Someone is standing outside our bedroom window!” He looked into the mirror again. The veiled woman was smiling. Then she whispered, “I told you not to take me home.” Daniel finally understood. He wasn’t driving away from the haunted forest. He had picked up the ghost at his own front door—before the journey even began. And in the mirror, the woman slowly lifted her veil. She had his wife’s face.
